Earth Hour @ Encore

For the second year, Encore Cinemas will be participating in the Earth Hour initiative.

We would love to power down both cinemas entirely for the hour, but (unlike most businesses and governments - yes that is a dig) we are still open for business Saturday at 8:30pm and that also happens to be the single busiest show of the week!

We at Encore do NOT pay lip service to environmental issues - we practice green initiatives every day and we continue to find new ways of doing what we do in a way to reduce our foot print even more. Having said that, we are going to participate in Earth Hour in a limited way. We will power down as much of the theatre lighting and equipment as possible while keeping the shows running and safe. We will announce to each audience at the beginning of the affected performance but we will not interrupt the performance.

Last year for Earth Hour, we reduced our consumption by 75% in that 60 minute period and we brought awareness to the issue to our audience.

As a bit of an editorialization, Saturday night is a good and safe time to have this demonstration world-wide, but we question the timing. As stated before, it is easy for governments, non-retail busienss and even most retailers and malls to sign up and shut down the power becuase they are already closed!  If we really want to have a nightime demonstation - then it should be during the week when stores are open, meetings are happening at Town Halls and Legislative Buildings, etc.

Havign said that, we are ready to go to do our part again!

We'll see you (or perhaps not if it is too dark...) at the movies!
