March 2009 Archives So here we go again, another big animated family film being released in Digital 3D. Big deal! OK, it is kind of a big deal... a BIG deal for the big cinema chains that can afford the $100,000 in digital cinema equipment. It's also a BIG DEAL for the families that want to see this film when they add up the $3.00/person 3-D surcharge on tickets. We are pleased to present this film - but we are doing so in glorious 2-D 35mm film, What will you be missing? Not much really except some gimmicky effects to demonstrate the "coolness" factor of 3-D films. Come to Encore and you can save big bucks to see the same movie! As our faithful guests already know, you save $3 to $4 per person on regular tickets - add to that the extra $3/ticket 3-D surcharge and the savings are, well, MONSTROUS!Ride out the recession with us at Encore and enjoy going to the movies without going broke! Jeff (the cheapo) CEO ![]() ![]() For the second year, Encore Cinemas will be participating in the Earth Hour initiative.
We would love to power down both cinemas entirely for the hour, but (unlike most businesses and governments - yes that is a dig) we are still open for business Saturday at 8:30pm and that also happens to be the single busiest show of the week! We at Encore do NOT pay lip service to environmental issues - we practice green initiatives every day and we continue to find new ways of doing what we do in a way to reduce our foot print even more. Having said that, we are going to participate in Earth Hour in a limited way. We will power down as much of the theatre lighting and equipment as possible while keeping the shows running and safe. We will announce to each audience at the beginning of the affected performance but we will not interrupt the performance. Last year for Earth Hour, we reduced our consumption by 75% in that 60 minute period and we brought awareness to the issue to our audience. As a bit of an editorialization, Saturday night is a good and safe time to have this demonstration world-wide, but we question the timing. As stated before, it is easy for governments, non-retail busienss and even most retailers and malls to sign up and shut down the power becuase they are already closed! If we really want to have a nightime demonstation - then it should be during the week when stores are open, meetings are happening at Town Halls and Legislative Buildings, etc. Havign said that, we are ready to go to do our part again! For more information on Earth Hour - visit their website at www.earthhour.org We'll see you (or perhaps not if it is too dark...) at the movies! Jeff the CEO
Disney has a great promotion going on right now that earns you a voucher to see Race to Witch Mountain when you buy select DVD's from their collection.
The best part is that we are not talking about their new and expensive movies, this promotion is for their older live action family films that cost (the ones I have found) between $10 and $14! You do the math - if you buy one of these great classics you get a certificate worth a free child or adult ticket admission to the NEW Race to Witch Mountain that we are playing starting Friday, March 13th - just in time for March break!! So far, I have found: The Black Hole Escape to Witch Mountain Return from Witch Mountain Flight of the Navigator Cat From Outer Space and I am looking for more (The full list of eligible movies is in this post below) I have found the promotional videos at Wal-Mart and SuperCentre (Loblaws) so far, but I am sure that most video retailers will carry them as well. One last thing on this promotion - you do not have to mail anything off or send in receipts to get a rebate. You simply go online to www.activaterewards.com/racetowitchmountain and entre the code from the packaging (it is on the shrink warp, so do not thrown it away before getting the coupon) and print the certificate. We redeem the coupon UP TO (we are not allowed to give change) one free admission per certificate - and at our prices you are fully covered! Buy several movies and bring the whole neighbourhood - one person per DVD coupon. There you have it... Encore is helping to make your moving goinf experience ever more affordable!
